Use Motion without Blocking Reading or Navigation

Animation should help people understand a change while keeping the content usable when movement is reduced or unavailable.

The core idea

Motion can reveal hierarchy, connect a state transition or acknowledge an action. It becomes distracting when every element competes for attention or when reading requires waiting through an entrance sequence. Start with a fully usable static state, then add short transitions whose purpose you can explain.

A practical approach

Step 1

Choose the one relationship the movement clarifies, such as a panel opening or a card receiving focus. Remove movement that communicates nothing.

Step 2

Keep content and controls available during the transition. Avoid using animation completion as the only trigger for an essential action.

Step 3

Respect reduced-motion preferences and test keyboard focus states separately from hover states.

Worked example

A course card can lift slightly on hover to indicate interactivity, while a visible focus ring serves keyboard users. A reading page can reveal sections subtly as they enter view, but all text should remain available if the animation script fails or the reader requests reduced motion.

A mistake to avoid

Animating large areas continuously can make an otherwise calm reading experience tiring. Hiding content with opacity until JavaScript runs also introduces a failure mode in which the page looks empty.

Try it yourself

Review every animation on one page. Label it feedback, relationship or decoration. Remove at least one decoration and test the remaining page with reduced motion enabled.

Your implementation checklist

  • Every motion has a clear purpose.
  • Content remains usable without animation.
  • Focus feedback does not depend on hover.
  • Reduced-motion preferences are respected.
